Wow! Just felt an earthquake for the first time (and hopefully last) in my life! 5.9 earthquake centered in Virginia but felt up the east coast. It was pretty scary. I work in a 4-story brick building and it was swaying. Everyone quickly headed out of building. Seems to be ok now so everyone headed back into work. This was only a 5.9 hundreds of miles from here - I can't imagine being in the middle of a huge 7-something one!

That is a scary shake. I think anything over 5.5 is freaky - that is if it's shallow. Has there been any damage that you know of?

It was only 1/2 mile deep which is probably why it was felt from so far. I haven't heard of any major damage or anyone hurt. Most of our nation's capital was evacuated. Now we have a major hurricane headed our way this weekend!

That earthquake was actually felt through parts of Canada too. Friends in Toronto, Ontario area were shook up a bit. Crazy weather we're having these days. Kind of makes you wonder....

I think its just that with communications the world has become a very small place and we here immediately about something that happens on the other side of the world. Years ago we might only hear of these events months later or not at all.
I'd hate to be in an earthquake ... we're having a heavy thunder shower here now & that's enough for us to cope with.

Yeah, you're right Fran. I'm always reminding myself that everything that is happening is "normal" but it's easy to think the world is ending when you're in the middle of big earthquake and hearing of events happening all around the world.

My first thought yesterday was that there must be some really heavy construction equipment in the area for some reason... and then the T-Rex from "Jurassic Park" crossed my mind... finally I sprinted out the front door realizing it was an earthquake, and watched the neighborhood lampposts dance back and forth.

No damage to speak of, and kind of a fun adrenaline rush overall!!

Well i certainly wouldnt have wanted to be in NY or Washington when that recent 5.9 quake hit, glad there are no fatalities, its quite unusual to have activity in that area..

Ok, earthquake earlier in week - now HUGE hurricane Irene. We are close to the beach in New Jersey and our county has ordered a mandatory evacuation. I'm now a few hours inland in the Pocono mountains of PA. Hope and pray all is well when we return home. Just waiting for it to hit sometime tomorrow!
