Re: Outdoor Play versus Electronics

Post by Boredwolf78 »

I am in absolute agreement that children should be involved in activities that do not include electronics. I used to be a General Manager at a fast casual restaurant. There were times when work was slow, and I would chat with my co-workers. Mind you, I live in a college town, so most of my employees were a decade or more younger than me. I would tell stories of my childhood. The antics my friends and I got up to. Only one or two of my stories involved video games. They were primarily about the things we did outdoors. It broke my heart to see how many of these young adults had no clue what I was talking about. Sometimes they would look at me with pure amazement. Parents these days do have to work quite a bit to be able to afford a household. But I feel they need to learn to balance their professional life, with home life better. They should be encouraging their kids to do more physical activities. Not just encouraging through words, but through actions as well.

I think that using electronic devices by children has turned out to be a serious problem. The young people just lose their ability to communicate face-to- face. They feel more secure to share their thoughts and ideas when they are hidden behind a screen. I think that by reading how Toni has fun playing games outside will set a good example for the kids to follow.

I think it is great that in the book, Toni's time isn't spent playing video games. My kiddo does love electronics, but we set boundaries. He loves to read and be outside playing with his friends. Electronics can be useful tools, but should never be used as babysitters. I like when books to emphasize video books. As an adult reader, I find a lot of novels reference electronics.
I completely agree. Although hugely important to be outside and learn to ‘just play’, by preventing children from using electronics we are doing them an enormous disservice. There are new jobs appearing all the time that exist only because of advancements in technology and we should be encouraging children to explore technology as well as engaging in ‘traditional’ exploring.

To some extent, technological advancement had contributed in the erosion of societal values. Today, it is common to see children spending a lot of time on phones, toys and watching television. This nurtures laxity among the children. It is often said that it is the environment that shape the character of a child.

Nowadays, children are so addicted to electronics gadgets. It's not good. They can't socialize and can't do outdoor activities because they spend their time alone in their house. It's not good also to their health especially to their eyes. Expose in electronics gadgets can damages someone's eyes. However, gadgets can be useful to education. Can search what they looking for. Homeworks, projects, etc. Must use it for good purposes.
The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.

I think all interests should be encouraged and nurtured. If a child likes watching movies discuss the movies afterwards, act them out, or have them write/tell their own version.
It's great that your niece likes to play outside. We read so many instances of children not wanting to leave the electronic games they are playing. Of course, it is difficult to know exactly what every child is doing. The media does rather like to portray the excesses of everything.

Children now days never play outside. More children are becoming obese because most children these days only play with electronics. They are not limited to the amount of time they play video games and play with electronics in a day. Most parents don't take the time to spend with their children. They just give them an electronic device to keep them occupied.

Children nowadays doesn't get to enjoy playing outside with neighbor kids with mud all over their face. Instead of muds ang piles of dirt, they got piles of gadgets.

I prefer that children get engaged in outdoor play to electronics. Electronics destroys the morals and cultural foundations of the society.

llpwap wrote: 02 Jul 2018, 09:43 It was refreshing to read about a child that didn’t have a phone or game controller stuck to his hand. I have seen kids sit in the same room and text each other instead of talking to each other. I hope that reading this book and some good examples set by parents will encourage children to play outdoors instead of in the house all day.
Playing with electronics is absolutely a wrong trend which leaves a bad impact on child's physical and mental health. This book is a good step to promote outdoor activities in children.
Make your ideals high enough to inspire you and low enough to encourage you.

Play is a way of exploring the possibilities of the life you are living. The electronics passes ideas, morals, teaching from the creators' perspective. Outdoor introduces the soul to natural vibration which is often considered best, it opens your spirit to accepting the real life as perceived by you, no one has to teach you anything unlike electronics where in one way or the other, you are being influenced from the creator's perspective. Outdoor play is the best way exploring than electronics. However, electronics seems to be the best option for introverts...

I do think people, not only children, spend way too much time on electronics instead of engaging in other activities but I don't think that children will even notice that this might be an underlying message in the story. :D

When my 7 year old read this book, he did notice that there was no tv, but didn’t mention any other devices not being used. He didn’t mind, of course, he just figured that meant that Toni didn’t like watching tv.
