I've never had the heart to tell my son that Catcher in the Rye is numbered amongst my least favourite stories. However, the cloud with the silver lining is that 'Caulfield' is another tangible connection my son has to his father beyond DNA. And how wonderful is that?

Daffodil wrote:I got chatting to a mum with kids at the grocery store and she called out to her daughter "Ayla!". I was so gobsmacked that I told her that was a character in one of my favourite books and she nodded wildly and said "YES! Clan of the Cave Bear!" I nearly dropped my eggs. I did consider it for my own children very briefly - but with the Aussie accent and the tendency to add 'ay... or hey' to the end of each sentence it was quickly banished. I ended up with Gracie for one of my girls as I fell in love with the little Aboriginal girl from 'Rabbit Proof Fence'.
