Neha Dhanak wrote: 29 Aug 2024, 07:34 This historical fiction starts with the protagonist's hope of being reunited with her family. Among the many themes, the strong longing for belonging stands out to me. I also appreciate the emphasis on a female-centered narrative. It's a beautifully written review—thank you!

It beautifully captures the essence of what makes Elaine Russell's novel so compelling. Deep appreciation for the well-researched historical context and the richly drawn characters, especially Geneviève's inspiring journey, shines through in every word. The way you highlight the intricate blend of identity, love, and resilience against the backdrop of colonial Laos is both insightful and moving. Your enthusiasm for the vivid world Russell has created is contagious, and your thoughtful observations about the lack of illustrations, while acknowledging the strength of the prose, add a well-rounded perspective. This review is a true testament to the power of historical fiction to transport, enlighten, and deeply move readers. Bravo!

The tree's strength and survival skills inspired the protagonist. The Lao gardener called the tamarind tree- 'mak kham' for years. It had grown straight and tall, expanding its lush canopy. Nice storytelling!
