Do you think a series can ever be too long?

I love to read series and I am usually sad when they end but sometimes its better that they do. Such a the Warrior series, it has like 40-50 books at least! By the time that it ended I knew quite a few people that had stopped reading the series.

For me The Sookie Stackhouse" series has gone on too long. I loved the books in the beginning but now I don't even bother reading the new ones.

Yes I think a series can be too long. For example the P.C. Cast House of Night Series. I love the first 6 books, but then it kept going and going so I lost interest. And as far as I know they are on the 11th book.

Yes. There becomes a point where it needs to wind down. Some will surpass that and then it just gets boring.

I love when a book I am reading continues into a series especially if the characters are strong and there is a good
plot .I cannot wait for the next book for me a series can never be too long.

I like books which go into series but the author has to I guess put in more effort to keep us engrossed with the book, I have read the series for 'The Chronicles of Narina ' and really liked it.

I think a series can definitely be too long. If the plot keeps being dragged along and events start to become repetitive. I think half the fun of reading a good series is when it ends and you can imagine what happens to the characters.

Yes, in some cases the author's imagination and/or enthusiasm starts to lag, and it will show in the writing. Sad as I am to see a favored series end, I still prefer for them to conclude while it's still good.

I love long series. I think of the characters as old friends and I love to watch them grow and change. However, if the author gets bored with them it starts to show.

I think it depends... sometimes series are great, as you never want the book to end so series really get you involve in the the characters of the books and really makes you feel like you know them.

Some authors are great at keep each series new and different while still staying true to the style of the book and the characters, but there are some books out there where I feel the series have only been made as a money making idea in hope for you to keep buying their books.

Yes, if a series is too long it tends to get boring and predictable, most of the time they follow the same story line that has just been dragged out to long.

I've known series (series-es?) that have gone too long, but the fatal flaws were not the fault of the many books but rather the small problems that each book had and repeated ad nauseum. If the characters are too weak, it may be tolerable or even unnoticeable in a single book, but put the same characters in multiple books, and you tire of them. If the author doesn't develop plot well, the plots will appear to steadily worsen as the series moves on. I think authors who aspire to write a series of books should consciously deepen the complexity of the plot and characters so it feels like there is perpetual development and growth as the books progress.

It all depends on the author. If a plot is written well any amount of books in a series is good.

Yes, most graphic novel series are ridiculously too long. Naruto and Inuyasha. They're both well over 50 volumes. The worst is Inuyasha. Each volume is practically the same plot and the ending stunk. Also, Wheel of Time. Any book that's over 1000 pages and takes around 14 volumes to read is WAY too long. I gave up at book 9. I figured, I've read 9,000 pgs and the story hadn't really progressed enough to keep me happy, so I said I'm done with it. My page tolerance is pretty high and I'm willing to keep reading longer books, but they have to keep the plot moving. I'm a definitely not the epic series type reader, though.

Haha, that depends on the series doesn't it! I can confidently say that I wouldn't mind if the Harry Potter series was twice as long
