Who is the best author of vampire fiction?

I like the way Deborah Harkness writes vampires. I don't love a novel that's all about vampires and vampires only, and she does a great job of defining the way she see the species and has other creatures: daemons and witches. Her All Souls trilogy is really good.

In my opinion, I would have to agree with the consensus here that Anne Rice is the best in the vampire genre. She has a way of bringing the vampires to life (no pun intended) as you go through their lives with them.

The best author for me is Stephanie Myers. Her series Twilight is my all time favorite. I watched the movie and read the books, her writing creates a sense of rush inside of me that i am pretty sure all readers experienced.

I was introduced to vampire fiction by Laurel K. Hamilton. She's created such a vivid world and I just love it. Definitely check her out.

Anne Rice gets my vote too! I'm not a fan of the current YA vampire novels (twilight, ect...), although I understand how a vampire is a perfect metaphor and vehicle for expressing the yearning and angst that characterizes the YA genre and the teenage years in general. Rice's Vampire Chronicles are a little more mature and senual (no surprise as Rice also write romance novels under the name A.N. Roquelaure)

Anne Rice for me. No question. But, I am bias. I don't know if I like her erotic writings and/or her religious writings. Let's cut to the chase. I love everything she writes.
Also, let us not forget that her son also is an excellent author.

Anne Rice created an excellent vampire series that still holds up as superior to the newer series like Twilight and others. I like the Rice books but Stephen King's 'Salem's Lot is still my favorite. Rich characters and really scary scenes make it creepy and wonderful.

For me it was all about Laurell K Hamilton.

Throughout my early twenties I was obsessed with the Anita Blake books, pre-ordering them all and counting down the days to release dates.

Shadow Falls series by C.C. Hunter, Mercy Thompson Series by Patricia Briggs, Twilight Series by Stephanie Meyer, House of Night Series by PC & Kristen Cast and that’s all I can think of besides Anne Rice or Bram Stoker. I chose these books because they have vampires through out the books, it’s more modern and each has different versions of vampire’s.

I don't know about best author of vampire fiction because I don't read it enough, but there's a book I love called The Secret Life of Laszlo, Count Dracula by Roderick Anscombe. It's a sort of realistic retelling of the Dracula story. I unearthed that gem in a thrift shop, and it did not disappoint. I've never read anything else by that author.
