Lily was waiting for her husband Adrian to return from his latest deployment so that they could begin a new life together. Then came the call that all military spouses dread. Adrian had died in a gunfight and Lily's entire life came crashing down. It took her a year to accept this loss. When she finally felt a little better, she decided to shift to a new city and start afresh. What she was not prepared for, however, was to fantasize and develop feelings for another man – Brady, her new neighbor.

From listening to her deepest secrets, to sampling her baking experiments, Brady has always been there for Lily. She feels like he is one of the few people who she can be honest and carefree with. With time, she develops a deep bond with him and seems to have found peace all over again. However, will her new neighbor reciprocate her feelings? Even if he does, will she be ready for another relationship this soon? How will their families react? Then comes the biggest question of them all – will she be able to settle down in life again?

I have read countless books belonging to the romance genre. What made Cannoli for the Cop Next Door by Laine Faro stand out for me was the fact that it was about a woman who decided to take control of her own life. As the book progressed, she decided to make a career out of her passion for baking, and I loved that. When she realized that she was developing feelings for another man, she did not bother too much about how "people" would react to it. She did not behave like a distressed protagonist who needed to be saved by a knight in shining armor, which was refreshing. She did what she thought would make her happy and I found that extremely inspiring.

I found the beginning of the book interesting and easy to read. However, as Lily and Brady’s relationship progressed, I felt like the plot dropped pace. The book seemed to drag and this made me impatient. I wanted the story to progress. However, after a certain point, I felt like I was only reading sex scenes repeatedly. After a very promising start to the book, I was left disappointed by this.

I rate the book 3 out of 4 stars. I liked the author’s portrayal of Lily’s character and I liked the basic concept behind the plot. However, the book soon became tiresome to read due to the slow pace of its plot. Further, I found many grammatical errors in the book. While these errors did not prevent me from understanding and following the plot, they interrupted my flow of reading. Overall, I have mixed feelings about this book. Since the book has numerous mature scenes, I would recommend it only to adults who are fans of the romance genre.

I had to laugh at the cover, as you can tell exactly what type of book this is by one glimpse at the picture on the front!
I think I will skip this one, but great review!

Lily sounds like a strong woman to deal with the loss of her husband in such a manner. Nonetheless, the romance genre is not something I normally read. I'm glad she takes control of her life, but I won't be reading this one. Glad you enjoyed it, though.

I, too, do not like it when there are too many sex scenes, especially when it slows down the action in the book. Thanks for a good review!

It seems like an interesting romance story with the main character being strong and resilient during her times of difficulties. Thank you for a thorough review.

I agree with you. It's funny; sometimes you can judge a book by its cover!

Thanks for the detailed review!
Good for Lily for finding herself. It's a shame about the overabundant sex scenes toward the end; I know exactly what you mean!

The cover also made me laugh! When you mentioned that the story regressed into just sex scenes, I found myself nodding my head. I think that's a trap that a lot of romance novels fall into. Thanks for a great review!

I love women, who don't hesitate to voice their passions. I liked how she took control of her life. I can also understand how you must have felt after the plot became slow and filled with sex scenes that do not contribute to the plot. The Authors must realize that a good novel should have more than just smut. thank you for the honest review.

Thanks for the review! The title sounded like it could be a cute contemporary romance! Looking at the cover, I thought that it was not the cutesy story I was looking for and your review convinced me!
