Blood Meridian: Or the Evening Redness in the West

Has anybody read Blood Meridian: Or the Evening Redness in the West by Cormac McCarthy? I just heard it is going to be adapted into a movie by Ridley Scott.

I've never heard of it before but I understand that some people rate it as one of the best novels of the last 25 years. (I never heard of Cormac McCarthy either before the movie No Country for Old Men came out.)

yes and theres no way itll work without being 8 hrs long and nc17. without a narrator the whole thing will grind on and upset those of us who read the book and offend those who didn't. i'm imagining an experience like dune.

I have read that Ridley Scott has mentioned that the level of violence in his planned film will not match that presented in the novel.

Indeed, it has been rated "one of the best"! I've read this book, and I love it!! This is Cormac McCarthy 5th book. He won the Pulitzer Prize for his novel "The Road", which I also have and is awesome! I have a signed copy

"No Country for Older Men" (the movie) won four Academy Awards. All ten of his novels are very good reads. He writes alot of post apocalyptic, and western stuff. I love westerns myself, (I've got a HUGE collection.) "The Road" is my favorite, its a "post-apocalyptic" tale.

Its funny, but if you were to walk in my personal library, (without seeing me) you would assume I was an old man, because of alot of the books I read. But I'm not, I'm a young woman

I'm curious to see who they'll cast as "the kid" and Judge Holden and of course the whole Glanton gang. Should be interesting. I often wonder if Judge Holden was albino?? He is one sick and extremely violent, cold-blooded killer. Not to mention he was a pedophile. Whoever they cast for his part will have to be TALL and NO hair anywhere, so yeah should be interesting.

The IMDB is silent on almost all aspects of the production, but based on your description and from others I have heard from I would think Gary Oldman might be a good choice for The Judge. Also Scott likes working with Russell Crowe and I think he has enough talent as an actor to stretch himself into such a role as this character.

I am ordering this book based on your advice. Thank uou for your reccommendation.

Gary Oldman TOTALLY has my vote!! He is an amazing actor!! I loved him in "Dracula" and "The Scarlet Letter" and of course I have both of those books

Perhaps my favourite book (with Moby Dick very close), just re-read it. I think you could make a movie but it would be better as a series Deadwood-style, of course next to unwatchable if they did it correctly ("won't somebody please think of the children - heh heh') and you'd need stones the size of cannonballs to even attempt it. I like the thought of Gary Oldman as the Judge, I think they'll need to sacrifice size for presence. I see Russel Crowe maybe as Glanton, the kid would be tough - Leonardo di Caprio in a stretch? Bathcat and Toadvine, also Jackson would be a lot of fun done right.

I read and liked No Country and The Road, but nothing else by McCarthy - what should I try next?

No way could they make the movie as violent as the book. Theaters would never run it.

I like Ridley Scott as director though - am hoping for good things. I expect we'll get "The Road" this year also. What a nice combo indeed!
