Across the River up to The Mountain by Theodora Johanna Snyder is about two people dreaming about each other for several years not knowing if the other person is real or just a figment of their imagination. It is a story of bullying, verbal abuse, depression, and marital neglect. It is also a story of hope, forgiveness, self-appreciation, redemption, free will, and unconditional love.

We follow the life of Gloria Foundling and how her worst day became the best day of her life. Written from Gloria’s perspective, readers will have an intimate view of her thoughts, emotions, and dreams. Readers will experience her fears, her desires, her anger, her worries, her excitement, and her joy.

From the book’s description, I was expecting a typical love story where the couple will fight for their love against all odds. But I was mistaken. Romantic love was not the chief point of this book, but the unconditional love of a father to his daughter. Gloria’s story represents my story on so many levels. There were several times when I said, “Hey, that’s me.” A story of a lost girl found by the insistent love of an extremely patient father.

What I like most in this story is how relatable the characters are. Gloria and Jarius are your ordinary girl and guy. Even how they deal and cope in life is ordinary. They encountered problems like divorce, the loss of a loved one, and unemployment like any human being. And like you and me, what they deeply desire is to be recognized and be heard, which Father, Immanuel, and Jake provided.

Additionally, what I like least are the numerous mistakes I discovered throughout the book. It varies from missing letters, wrong verb form, wrong pronoun, wrong spelling, and missing punctuation marks that make me doubt the level of editing it went through.

With all things considered, I give 3 out of 4 stars to Across the River up to The Mountain by Theodora Johanna Snyder. I deduct a star mainly because of the many mistakes that made the experience less enjoyable. Although this is fiction and generally a love story, I should point out that some readers may not like the indirect connection of the story with the Bible. There were subtle references that even I, a Bible reading individual, almost miss. Aside from that, I recommend this to mature readers who like long-distance love stories. In addition, iconic landmarks of some countries were mentioned and explored, so travel enthusiasts will also enjoy this. I only encourage mature readers for this book because of mature content like violence and lovemaking.
