A Great Book out of Louisiana
In A Savage Wisdom, Toni Jo Henry was the real birth named used in the story and Annie Beatrice McQuiston was the Nickname. In reality it’s the other way around. Also, there are two other main characters that are misnamed. Harold Nevers, Toni Jo’s lover, actual real name is Claude Henry and his friend Arkie Burk, whose real name is Harold Burks.
In A Savage Wisdom, Toni Jo starts as the admirable hard worker who wants to make it to “Normal School”. Working One day she was swept off of her feet by Harold Nevers by his catchy lines and his inviting personality. German makes Nevers seem like the classy business gentleman and Toni Jo the innocent sweet woman. In reality, these two have been charged with numerous different things and even been to prison. Further on, Nevers took Toni Jo to the big city of New Orleans, Louisiana to help with his restaurant. German describes the city with such detail that it feels like you are right there in the Crescent City. German is a Louisiana Native so this portrayal of the City is precise as anyone who lives there can imagine. Toni Jo’s journey of her breakout of fictional norm was starting to become more exciting and chilling. This rich handsome man, Nevers, treated Toni Jo to anything and everything. Keeping his business life very personal, Toni Jo begins to discover mess that she has already been knee deep in.
The way German reconstructed this story made the tale more extreme than ever. Nevers had been into prostituting women and Toni Jo made herself fall into his mind trap. Toni Jo then became everything Nevers planned on making her. This is what German wanted the readers to guess from the clues and signs of progress of Nevers imprisoned plan. German made the Nevers character very sketchy from the beginning and warning readers of a crisis further on in the end. Here is where German genuinely writes about the cold-hearted revenge that Toni Jo had been holding inside of her.
After fleeing from being mistreated and used, Toni Jo and Arkie made their way out of the city. After not hearing about the Character Nevers for a while, readers being to draw conclusions of how this murder is going to happen. Arkie and Toni Jo had fallen in love and eventually got married. One night after going watch a movie, Arkie picked up a hitchhiker while Toni Jo napped quietly. At this point, German had built suspense to the top level and climax of the story. This hitchhiker was Harold Nevers. Outraged and completely crazy, Toni Jo made numerous threats to him and her mind couldn’t control itself. In conclusion, Harold Nevers was shot dead.
In reality, it wasn’t Nevers that was shot. At this time, Nevers was in Jail and Arkie and Toni Jo were plotting to steal a car and bust him out. The person who was really shot was the driver of that car, Joseph P Calloway. Both Arkie and Harold were executed for the killing which landed a spot in the history books. Luckily, German picked up all the pieces in this suspenseful Louisiana story. I would highly recommend this reading of A Savage Wisdom to anyone who is fans of suspenseful thrillers. This text influences readers, especially those who live in Louisiana, to dig deeper into the story. From Toni Jo’s first experience living the good life to the brutal murder, German’s textual style kept my eyes glued to the book. There were many twists in this story and many fictional parts throughout it. Norman German didn’t ruin the real story; in fact, he made it much more worth reading about this legend
