Icon Book Review: I'm in no mood for love by Rachel Gibson

Post by sassy_n_savy »

So I believe this is the second book from the Writer's Series about four friends who are also writers. This book is about Clare - the romance novelist with a really romantic heart and a bad case of falling in love with a guy who never really seems to love her back! Sebastian (the male protagonist) is her childhood crush who used to terrorize her frequently. I really liked this book for several reasons:

1. The characters have some serious problems and they are addressed in the book. Clare has an overbearing, disapproving mother and her constant desire to find Mr. Right (since she's been with many Mr. Wrongs in the past). Sebastian is clearly arrogant, somewhat manipulative (which doesn't really change throughout the book), some daddy issues he's trying to fix, and some commitment issues (which he doesn't really acknowledge until the end)

2. I absolutely loved how these two characters first meet. It takes place after the end of the first book (so there are no overlaps in romances between other writer characters) and its pretty brassy and bold how they end up seeing each other for the first time in years (I won't give that away!)

3. I really liked how the writer females all have an appearance in the book, but they are sparse appearances and they don't end up monopolizing the whole story. And the fact that they support each other consistently through the good and bad (staging interventions...gosh I wish my friends would do that for me!)

4. The banter was good, and laugh out loud funny at times but at times it did feel like it dragged on for long..but that might just be me

The one thing I really didn't like:
Clare and her mother don't have the best relationship in the world, with her mother sort of embarrassed about Clare's choice of career. But we never really see it improve as much, Clare just accepts that she can't living her life to impress her mom... but I think her mom needs to let go of her ideals and just be happy for her kid. We clearly see Sebastian trying to make an effort to get to know his old man, and there are some blunders along the way (which is natural) so why can't the readers also see her Clare's relationship with her mother improve?

Overall: its a good book and like the first book of this series I would recommend reading it :)
