Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte: Review

Post by beccawecca »

As it is Ireland, and Irish weather is possibly the most interchangeable weather ever, I shall write a couple of reviews.
I think this is my first review- the other one is most likely lost somewhere on this website- so, hi, nice to meet you guys. I love books and reading and writing and I hope I'll be visiting this website a lot more in the future.

The book I'm reviewing today is Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, a classic gothic-romance novel. It follows Jane Eyre, a lowly orphan, from childhood to womanhood, and chronicles the relationship between her and a man who manages to terrify her and romance her at the same time.

The book, as it starts off, is well... marshy, if you know what I mean. The writing is vast but it slows you down- you have to work through a childhood, an upbringing and a life at Lowood school before you even get to the heart of the story. But Jane's background and upbringing really show her character, and with the many struggles she has to endure, you grow to care for her and root for her. Jane Eyre has to be one of the best female characters in the history of literature.

But Rochester has to be the most well-rounded hero in romantic literature. He is deeply flawed, deeply disturbed, yet it is clear Jane is attracted to him, and, later, madly in love with him. It's hard to tell who Rochester was before Thornfield Hall- he may have been a playboy in his younger years, but now he is solemn and stern, as the demons he collected in his younger years haunt him.
But what he feels for Jane is wild, passionate, and ultimately, legitimate. Their relationship is full of unfulfilled but deeply desired passion, and just through Jane's narrative you really know what she feels for him.

Good writing, brilliant character development, and beautiful prose. 4.5./5
