THE JEALOUS BOYFRIEND a short story by giftedpen
"What is that?" Stacy asked.
"Huh?" Jennifer asked back.
Stacy turned the music down and repeated herself.
"What's what?" Amy asked.
"That!" Stacy replied, pointing at the body ahead, lying on the roadside.
"It looks like a man." Jennifer replied.
"Should we stop," Stacy asked, "see if he is OK?"
"No," Niki replied. "We're in the desert. He could be a killer, playing possum."
"There is four of us and one of him. Plus, I have mace, a stun gun, and two knives." Jennifer reasoned.
Then Jennifer pulled the SUV over. She opened the glove compartment, took out the weapons, and handed Niki the stun gun, and Amy the mace.
"You guys stand in front of the truck. Make sure you cover us." Jennifer said. "Do you mind coming with me, Stacy?"
"No, I don't mind." Stacy replied. "That poor man is, probably, too hurt to hurt us."
Amy and Niki did as Jennifer instructed. Then, Jennifer and Stacy approached the man. He was black, had a lean, muscular build, wearing black suit pants, dress shoes, and no shirt. He looked like a model.
"Are you OK, Mister?" Jennifer asked.
"Of course, he's not...O-K!" Amy yelled. "He's lying, unconscious, in a desert, half-naked."
"Tamela..." the man mumbled; eyes closed.
"Sir, what happen to you?" Jennifer asked.
"Tamela...he...she...dead," the man relied, before rolling his eyes up, and losing complete consciousness.
"Call 911!" Stacy yelled to Niki and Amy.
Amy pulled out her phone first and dialed.
"There's no signal." Amy announced.
Niki tried her phone. She didn't have a signal either.
"It's all these mountains." Stacy explained, "there are no towers out here."
"So what do we do?" Amy asked.
Jennifer looked off in the distance to the left, then the right. She hoped her eyes would fall upon something, someone, to help them. But there was nothing but dust, mountains, and road.
"We should just take him to the closest town with a hospital." Jennifer suggested.
The girls looked at each other, trying to digest the proposal.
"Look, if anyone doesn't feel comfortable with sitting with him, I'll do it." Jennifer declared.
"OK," Stacy said. "It's not right to leave a man, that is half-naked and half-beaten, alone on the road.
"Alright, but I want to sit in the front." Niki agreed.
"I'll sit in the back with Jennifer." Stacy said.
"OK, that leaves Niki and I up front." Amy said. "I guess I'll drive."
"Amy and Niki get his feet. Stacy and I will take his arms." Jennifer said.
They did just as Jennifer instructed, but when they loaded him in the backseat, a wallet fell out of his pocket. After getting him in, Jennifer reached down and picked up his wallet.
"He has a Nevada driver's license." Jennifer announced, "and he has a Las Vegas address."
"Are you suggesting we take to Las Vegas?" Amy asked.
"We are headed that way." Jennifer replied.
"But what if he needs immediate medical attention?" Niki asked.
"We're three hours from Las Vegas. If it seems we need to take him to a hospital, we'll stopped before Vegas." Jennifer offered.
