Dark fantasy suggestions?

Post by EmilieMarie »

Hello.

I'm 21, and love reading dark fantasy, preferable the ones that takes place in the world we know, but of course with a twist.
I've had some trouble finding titles lately, and was thinking if anyone had some suggestions?

Thank you in advance! :tiphat:

I loved Tithe and Valiant by Holly Black, which are both dark urban fantasy. They're about malicious fae and trolls and such interacting with humans. She also wrote the darker part of the forest, which I haven't read yet but my wife says it's similar.

If you haven't read it yet, I recommend "The Book of Lost Things" by John Connolly! It's more based around twisted and dark fairytale retellings, but does take place (some of it) in the real world and has definite fantasy elements.

I'd also recommend, if you haven't already read it, the Fever series by Karen Marie Moming. The first book is darkfever. The main character's sister is murdered in Ireland and she goes to Ireland to try get to the root of her murder. While investigating she gets pulled into the dangerous world ignore the fae. It takes places in modern Ireland and contains a lot of delicious tension of the sexual variety as well if you're into romance ;). You won't be able to put this book down, trust me. And you'll be left with a huge book hangover but it's worth it!

Perhaps not overly dark but for a slightly YA feel read I enjoyed The Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead. If you don't mind sex in the book Anita Blake series or Meredith Gentry series by Laurell k. Hamilton

Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost
Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs

The Cal Leandros series by Rob Thurman. They're urban fantasy and I love them. Especially if you like brother relationships a la Supernatural.

The Child Thief is pretty awesome. It's a dark retelling of Peter Pan, so it takes place a little bit in the real world (when he comes to collect new children), though I must say that a lot of it is in the other world (the 'Neverland', though I think in this book it was called something different. Can't really recall, it's been a while since I read it)
The author of The Child Thief, Gerald Brom, mostly writes dark fantasy I believe, but I've only read the Peter Pan one.

It's more a work of literary fiction that happens to have some fantastical elements within it than it is a pure fantasy novel, but "The Shadow of the Wind" by Carlos Ruiz Zafon is a wonderfully dark read!
