Have you ever wondered what your life would look like if you had something different? Have you blamed yourself and suffered for an accident whose results you don’t even know? Evergreen by Sharon Elliot is a historical fiction novel that takes these questions into reality while telling the story of Sapphire and Bree.

Sapphire and Tess have been friends for their whole lives. Growing up in rural Australia, it was obvious everyone knew who they were. When an accident changes their lives, Sapphire cannot deal with the consequences and decides she needs to start over in a new place. There, she creates a new life, until her great-granddaughter Bree introduces her to someone who brings back some memories that Sapphire would rather keep buried in the back of her mind. What happened between Sapphire and Tess? What memories did Bree unconsciously bring back for Sapphire? Can we truly escape from our past? Read Evergreen to find the answers to all of these questions.

The book is entertaining and full of emotions; it was easy to get familiar with the characters and follow the story, even when it was happening simultaneously in two different time periods. Each character had a unique personality and voice; it was easy to distinguish everyone, even if the author hadn’t included the date and narrator. Overall, I enjoyed more reading about Sapphire and her life in the 1940s than I did reading about Bree, but they both were incredible characters.

There are two problems I have with this book. The first is that it needs another round of editing. I found more than ten errors, which makes me believe the book has not been professionally edited. The second problem is that I found the book repetitive, especially towards the end. Because of everything I have said, I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

I recommend this book to those who enjoy historical fiction. While I cannot say how accurate the events are, the descriptions and narration were enjoyable.

I like that the author narrates the events of different decades while maintaining distinguishable characters. I wonder whether Sapphire sees herself in her great-granddaughter.
