“Rescuing General Patton”, a novel written by Curtis Stephen Burdick, doesn’t even wait for the first chapter to catch you, but it already does so starting from the front page.

Brilliant and intricate, the story Burdick writes is a mix of genres, which I would genuinely recommend not only to people who love military novels but to anyone who loves action, history, and adventure.

The plot, although fictitious, is rich in details that create an extremely accurate portrayal of what used to happen in wartime. Along with the writing style, which is characterized by plenty of terms specific to the semantic field of war, it is possible for the reader to effortlessly picture the scenes as if it were a movie.

The narration is marked by the presence of numerous dialogues among characters, which I really appreciated since they make the book's rhythm very fast-paced. Moreover, they are written using accurate American slang and, along with the choice of using some Italian words in some passages, a glimpse of reality is truly shown. However, to a non-American reader some of those dialogues might come across as very hard to fully understand, and it could require some extra time to go through them.

Finally, the book never comes across as boring since actions follow one after another at a fast pace, which contributes to an atmosphere of tension and adrenaline. The author makes the reader really get attached to the main characters, and a lot of emotions are felt while reading the story, which abruptly stop when the author ends the narration of the events of the past by jumping back to the present day. Although quite shocking at first, I did eventually appreciate the decision, and when I thought that it was all going to be over, the author took another chance to catch the reader by surprise with an emotional and unexpected ending.

For all that has been said before, I believe it would be more than fair to rate this book 4 stars out of 4 as it is an incredible and accurately written book. I believe, indeed, that the choices the author made turned out to be spot on, and I would not have it wanted any different.
