Review of Verity Easton
Verity Easton by M. Rebecca Wildsmith is a captivating mystery novel based in the early 1900s. Verity is a young girl from England who lost her Egyptian mother at a very young age. She has a strained relationship with her father and refers to him as professor. Verity accompanies her father to Egypt on an expedition to uncover the true burial place of Queen Nefertiti. Upon her travels in Egypt, she befriends a young man by the name of Mr. Rashidi and an older woman, Lady Bethy, whose charisma draws the attention of many men. Lady Bethy takes Verity under her wing and provides not only friendship but also the needed funding to continue her father’s expedition in Egypt.
Verity begins having strangely realistic dreams and finds herself in curious situations upon waking. Several murders occur, and Verity begins to question her own sanity in these puzzling circumstances. Does Verity’s father uncover the true whereabouts of Queen Nefertiti? Will Verity discover the reason behind her strange dreams? Read this book to find out those answers and so much more.
I rate this book four out of five stars. It was exceptionally well edited as I encountered no errors at all. I truly enjoyed the author's poetic style of writing. The vocabulary in this book is advanced, and the author has a very unique style that’s almost as if the book is written as a journal from a young British girl's perspective. There are only two improvements I can say I wish were incorporated. I would have appreciated more of a backstory with Verity’s mother. The author does leave many questions in that regard. The book also had a rather slow start. It wasn’t until much later into the book that more details about the characters were revealed.
I would recommend this book to a young adult audience and anyone interested in the early 1900s time period.
