ARA Review by Armistruent Books of In It Together

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

In It Together: The Beautiful Struggle Uniting Us All by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes is a reflective, spiritual self-help book that invites readers to examine the inner conflict between ego and consciousness. Hughes proposes that we are made of two selves—the primitive, survival-driven ego and the higher, conscious self capable of love and unity. The central message is that inner peace and collective harmony come when we learn to quiet the ego and live from the place of awareness and compassion.

The book is divided into accessible sections that address universal human challenges, such as consumerism, emotional reactivity, war, and loneliness. One striking chapter, “Gluttony That Kills,” draws a parallel between global hunger and overconsumption in wealthy societies, asking readers to reflect on their own habits in light of broader human suffering. Another powerful section uses the nursery rhyme “Humpty Dumpty” to discuss the illusion of the physical self, reinforcing the idea that who we are transcends the body and mind.

Hughes' writing is sincere and often poetic, but the style can sometimes veer into repetition or abstraction. Readers who prefer concrete steps or a traditional self-help format may find the book’s philosophical tone less accessible. Still, for those open to a meditative, soul-searching experience, there is meaningful wisdom to uncover.

I appreciated the book’s compassionate voice and its call for collective healing, though I wished for more practical tools to accompany the philosophical insights. Some examples felt emotionally powerful but would benefit from clearer application to everyday life.

Rating: 3 out of 5

I gave this book 3 out of 5 because while the message is uplifting and timely, the delivery could be more concise and grounded. It didn’t quite reach the depth of a 4-star read, but it offered more than a 2-star experience, especially for introspective readers.
