"skitoma" or "scotoma"

I've been reading about this mistake print in the Da Vinci code. They say your book it valuable if the word "scotoma" is spelled "skitoma". However i have a 17th printing and it's still spelled "skitoma". Does anyone know what's going on or is this a plot for Dan Brown to drive everyone crazy.
