I buy used books because it's economic for a student like myself. It's totally your choice, if you have the money to buy new ones then go for it. After all it's good to contribute to the world of education. Who am I to tell you what to do.
HAHA :D

Both ... I would give a used Classic as a gift but certainly not a used paperback.

I personally prefer new books if i knew i would reread and keep the book, plus you cant beat that new book smell! I would only buy an old book if i couldnt get it new or order it online.

I buy second hand mostly.

Primarily because it's cheaper, but also because I treat my books so shabbily that I don't deserve new books!

I love second hand bookstores with a passion. The things you can find!

The book is new if I haven't read it.

Both. Whenever I see a very interesting book, even if it's second hand, I don't mind.

Mostly used: I like the smell of old books that have been in a secondhand shop for a long time. They're also a lot cheaper, although when buying online, shipping adds up. Still, buying used books online is a good way to find books that have been long out of print.

If I buy a new book, it is either because I decided I wanted a recent release, or because I am purchasing a gift for someone.

I buy new when I have the money too or if there is a book I want and it isn't available used. Most of the time it's just cheaper to buy a book used rather than new. As long as it's not in horrible condition, I still like to have my books look nice, it doesn't matter to me.

I don't really mind whether the book is old or new - I rarely buy books, rather go to the library. When I do, I just google like 10 minutes for used and if I don't find anything, I buy a new one.

I will buy any type of book. However I will always choose hardcover over softcover and softcover over paperback. I also collect signed first edition copies of books, so most of the time these are much older. I am a true bibliophile, I love the smell, the feel, the look, how a book is bound, what type of paper, illustrations etc etc. :)

I buy used if I can find what I want in a reasonable time frame. I keep a list in my phone and whenever I go to half price books or other bookstores I look for those titles. If I am absolutely hellbent on reading something immediately I buy it new!

Used, 99% of the time. Its far more economical for us because we are voracious readers. Not only that, but generally the used selection is wider as we tend to be purveyors of classics and off beat titles. Plus, I feel like our money goes to a good cause, such as the goodwill or friends of the library organizations.
