If authors record their own books, it can add a whole new dimension of depth to the way a piece of literature is perceived.

That would definitely provide a different perspective for the reader.

I find my mind wandering if I try listening to an audio book in the car or anywhere really. I prefer to have a tangible copy in my hands that I can focus on.

My dad LOVES audiobooks... But I just cant get into them... I think the voices are boring and I love to be able to visualize it in my head while reading, not listening.

I have tried to listen to audiobooks, but I just can't do it. I get too distracted by everything else and it just becomes background noise. I can tune in and realize that I have missed an entire chapter or major event in the story. This makes it so that I spend more time trying to figure out what is going on than actually enjoying the story.

It's interesting so many people have a hard time with audiobooks, I've never experienced that.

I don't even want to try audiobooks. For me, I space out easily when people are talking to me and in the past with school audiobooks those just end up disastrous. So real thing, definitely.

I just started listening to Doctor Sleep by Stephen King and narrated by Will Patton. I will tell you that Patton is one of the best narrators I've ever listened to and I've listened to several of his. His voice is yummy and husky and he does a fantastic job with emotion, inflection, gender, etc. If you're looking to give audio a try, find something he narrated, I think you will be pleased.

The real thing. Audiobooks put me to sleep. I have found that pairing an audiobook with the actual book for my 8 year old has been quite effective in getting her to enjoy reading a little more.

It might depend on what kind of person you are :) I am a music-only (in the car) person myself, but my hubs loves listening to audio books while driving. I think I would enjoy listening to an audio book if I was doing chores (laundry, cooking) but I'm not sure. Maybe I will try it!

I could not imagine me listening to an audiobook while driving. Just as bad as texting and driving, for me. I would either doze off, or start daydreaming about the book while I'm driving. Recipe for an accident, for me.

I agree. I think that is why I like music instead. :)

When I have to spend a long time in the car I use the time to listen to something I haven't read, preferably fiction. At all other times I want to have the book in hand (whether hard copy or e-book) so I can make notes and record my thoughts.

Both audiobooks and the real thing have been part of my upbringing. When I was young there was a biweekly release called Storyteller which really helped my reading and developed my love of reading, however I do love feeling the pages between my fingers.
