The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

Review of Asylum by Susy Smith

Asylum by Susy Smith is a chilling psychological thriller that masterfully explores the fine line between sanity and madness. The novel is set within the confines of a mental institution, but it goes far beyond the typical narrative of confinement and disorder. Instead, Smith delves deeply into the minds of her characters, revealing the complexities of their thoughts, fears, and identities.

The story is driven by an ensemble of characters, each with their own tragic backstory that has led them to be institutionalized. Smith’s portrayal of these characters is both sensitive and haunting, allowing the reader to empathize with their struggles while also questioning the very nature of their afflictions. Is it the asylum that causes their madness, or is it society’s inability to understand them? This central theme runs throughout the novel, making Asylum a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant read.

Smith’s writing style is both engaging and unsettling, capturing the claustrophobic atmosphere of the asylum while offering glimpses into the psyche of its inhabitants. The pacing is deliberate, drawing readers into the tension-filled world of the institution and keeping them hooked with its unpredictable twists. Each chapter unravels a little more of the mystery surrounding the characters’ pasts, creating a sense of urgency and suspense.

While the novel deals with heavy themes such as mental illness, identity, and societal expectations, it does so with respect and nuance. Smith does not sensationalize the suffering of her characters but instead invites the reader to consider the complex factors that contribute to their situations. It’s a refreshing approach that adds depth to the narrative and encourages reflection.

In conclusion, Asylum is a gripping exploration of the human mind, society’s treatment of those it deems “other,” and the question of what truly defines madness. Susy Smith’s ability to craft complex characters and evoke such a strong emotional response makes this novel a standout in the psychological thriller genre. If you’re a fan of character-driven stories that examine the intricacies of human behavior, Asylum is a must-read.
