ARA Review by Nanci Race of The Savage Surrogate

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

The Savage Surrogate

When Juliette McBride breaks her rule and opens an anonymous email, she discovers it’s from a man she met years ago, Mr. Who. He explains that when she met an old friend from college, Fran Whittaker for lunch, she told Juli about her suspicions about the Human Trafficking Syndicate.

Because the Syndicate had operatives everywhere someone must have heard their conversation and because of Fran’s sensitive job at the Egyptian Embassy, she is deemed a threat. As a result, Fran is kidnapped and possibly being trafficked by the Syndicate. Although Juli, her husband, Senator Mike McBride, Fran’s brother, and other people with the help of Mr. Who, were able to track down and arrest several Syndicate members. Mr. Who tells Juli that the remaining members have reorganized. Because Juli saved Mr. Who’s life, he wants to help find Fran.

In the meantime, her husband, the Senator, has his hands full after receiving an anonymous letter stating that there are rumors of theft from the new administration, including the mayor. Businesses are closing in addition to an entire wing of the hospital. Mike had to travel to Carson City to find out what was happening, without the people under suspicion finding out why he was there.

This book spans several continents and the United States. Although there are multiple plot lines, the book is broken into separate components so it’s easy to figure out what’s happening. The author’s characters are well-developed and three-dimensional so that the reader gets a sense of being part of the story. Every dramatic scene is realistic and edge-of-your-seat good.

The suspense mounts as Juliette travels with Mr. Who, her extraordinary, special tracking dog, Lady Dog, and a dog handler Robbie. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes an intriguing, international story with two intricately woven plot lines that converge. All the elements blend seamlessly, and that makes it hard to put the book down. Because it is well-written, interesting, and intriguing, I would give it five out of five.
