Life can change in an instant, as Donnie learnt when a bizarre occurrence changed their family dynamics. What do you do when life turns its back on you? In  "Grief is the Price We Pay for Love", young Donnie Dawson recounts her experience of how she survived life's challenges. I appreciate the lovely review.

I thought the book had a kind of Laura Ingalls Wilder feel to it, though maybe a bit more scattered. Good job putting a warning for sensitive material.

At first glance, reading the title of this book, it might seem like it's going to be a read based on pain. From the review, we learn about Donnie's story, what he tells us from birth to the present, and how family dynamics affected his relationships or projections into his adult life. It's possible that many of the stories mentioned could resonate with readers, which is interesting, since it's also possible to learn from other people's stories.

Aimee Goodwin-Cole’s Grief is the Price We Pay for Love is a profoundly moving and deeply personal journey through the landscape of loss, love, and healing. Drawing from her own experiences, the author crafts a heartfelt narrative that doesn’t just talk about grief — it lives in it, sits with it, and slowly learns to breathe through it.

This isn’t a traditional self-help book filled with clichés and quick-fix steps. Instead, Goodwin-Cole invites you into her world, where grief is raw and real. Her writing is honest and vulnerable, often poetic, and she allows the emotional weight of her words to sit heavily on the reader’s heart — in the best way possible.

What makes this book truly special is its emphasis on the idea that grief is not something to “get over,” but something to carry, honor, and eventually integrate into life. The title itself — borrowed from a quote by Queen Elizabeth II — beautifully captures the essence of the book: that love and grief are two sides of the same coin.

This book will resonate with anyone who has experienced the death of a loved one, a heartbreak, or any deep emotional loss. It’s a gentle companion for those dark nights, reminding you that your grief is valid because your love was real.

If you’re looking for a book that understands your pain without trying to “fix” it, Grief is the Price We Pay for Love is a must-read. It doesn’t offer false hope — it offers truth, presence, and a shared humanity.

This book is perfect for me and I plan to purchase it for my collection. Losing my mom in 2010 was very hard for me to process, until this day I still grieve.

Along with nicknaming her Donnie, I hope being a tomboy made her parents happy, at least at the time. For some reason, I did not catch that this book was non-fiction until your review. That fact gives me a new perspective on the story.

Grief is the Price We Pay for Love: Young Donnie's Story by Aimee Goodwin-Cole, though a nonfiction, comes across as fiction. I wonder who Donnie is in the life of the author.

The title of this book, "Grief is the price we Pay for Love" by Aimee Goodwin-Cole sounds somewhat subjective. It really got me thinking. Is grief a price we pay for love or rather a phenomenon of humanity? It'll be interesting to read how young Donnie's experiences and family dynamics impacts tragedy on relationships.

"Grief is the price we Pay for Love: Young Donnie’s Story" by Aimee Goodwin-Cole is a novel about Donnie Dawson and her family from 1950 to 2020. She was named Madonna, nicknamed Donnie, since her dad had wanted a son. Donnie is very curious about her environment and her family’s way of life enlightens readers to how she understands issues around her. She describes her siblings Max, Sissy and Belle, and her parents Jack and Deidre. Her parents decided that Donnie should start school early since she was very curious and advanced for her age. The family lived in the Australian outback where Donnie was enjoying a fun life. She traveled with her family to see Queen Elizabeth II when she visited Australia, and to visit her fraternal grandparent’s Nanna and Poppy and other relatives like Uncle Barry and Aunt Esther. Disaster struck in 1956 when her dad was in an auto accident. He had to abandon his vehicle and he lost his work tools that he used to help farmer irrigate their crops during a drought. The loss of Jack’s income drove him into depression and he became a heavy drinker. This transformed him from a loving husband and father to an abusive man that no longer enjoyed life. Donnie’s parents separated and were probably headed for divorce. The book details how Donnie and her family’s lives were changed by the impact of tragedy. The story includes the violent outbursts by her dad, his threatening her mom with an axe, how the family was affected by a devastating flood and the lasting effects of her dad’s suicide. Deidre was an excellent mother and she raised her four children to be strong and resilient in the face of tragedy.

I mean no offense, but from the description provided, the story sounds like a memoir of an unfortunately quite ordinary life. The majority of kids get their happy childhood snatched from them by divorce or other family issues and tragedies; that is what's called maturity. We finally grow up once we are disappointed by the fact that parents also are mere mortals with all flaws attached. Still, congratulations on BOTD!
