Review of The Beauty at the Bus Stop
In Beauty at the Bus Stop, we meet Evan, a Colorado native who has been laid off from his bank job. His girlfriend of 2 years is moving to Fargo and wants him to tag along. At an impulsive decision, Evan decides to move to LA and live with his cousin. On one of his first days in LA, Evan sees a beautiful girl at a bus stop and can’t stop thinking about her. Lo and behold, sometime later the girl from the bus stop, Ashley, comes to his work to be a temp worker.
Ashley is an LA native and desperate for stability and security, while her best friend is focused on wealthy men and the fame they could bring her. Ashley bounces from job to job scraping by, but what she dreams of doing is designing jewelry. Evan is just one of many men who find her beautiful, and yet she does seem drawn to him. She knows what she wants and doesn’t, and Evan seems to just do whatever falls in front of him.
Faced with always being stuck and just rolling with life or taking charge and living, Evan starts to take risks he’s never considered. He is determined to show Ashley how great they could be together if she would only choose him.
This story intrigued me. Evan and Ashley felt so opposite to each other in the beginning, I almost couldn’t picture them together. It was interesting to see them grow from acquaintances to friends, then to something more. Many times I feel like books can rush to the character being “in love” too quickly. It was also really refreshing to see both characters be very communicative with one another. I loved that, in the end, they needed to both choose to better themselves to truly be together, not just one of them changing to appease the other.
I give this book a 3 out of 5. Overall, this was a great love story. I wanted to see Ashley and Evan a little more during the time they were falling for each other. We see a few dates and times together, but most of the story is then thinking about the other. I would have liked more of their chemistry together and seeing them have fun together as a couple.
