Review of Benny Builds His Dream Boat
In “Benny Builds His Dreamboat” by Hong Z. McCormick, we are taken on an adventure with Benny the Bunny and his cast of friends – Charlie, Molly, Axel and Chipper (the beaver brothers), the muskrat family and Rocky Racoon – as they prepare to journey down the Whispering River. The book opens up with Benny sharing his concerns about the upcoming winter with Ollie the Owl, who advises him to leave Whispering Woods and journey south. So, with the help of his friends, he begins building a boat, which they name The Adventurer, to make the journey.
The book's first few chapters each describe a different phase of the building operation: assembling the materials, building the hull, and weaving the sail. There are a few snags along the way, but they get the boat built. Soon after that, however, they hit another snag in the form of sabotage by a would-be crew member who has a beef with Benny. Other obstacles follow: a leak, problems with the boat’s ballast, and some rocky waters. Through it all, the cast of furry friends remains strong, facing each problem with courage, resolve, and teamwork.
This is a terrific book. The characters are likable, and the author does a good job of creating suspense as they face numerous obstacles. The editing is excellent, and I found no errors. I especially appreciated the illustrations, which are large, bright, and vividly drawn. My guess is that no expense was spared with regard to the rich images that pepper this book.
I think kids will enjoy this book about the brave inhabitants of Whispering Woods and their journey south for the winter. There are great lessons here about perseverance, courage, and teamwork that kids can learn a lot from and that parents will also appreciate. I gladly give it 5 out of 5 stars. I really couldn’t find anything to dislike. This book is part of a series, so don’t expect a resolution at the end. However, this terrific volume will whet your appetite for the next installment about Benny the Bunny and his intrepid band of furry friends.
