The Mystery of the Emerald Skeleton is a terrific book for the tween crowd. In fact, I believe anyone between the ages of 9 and 99 could find enjoyment in this delightful book. The author gives great descriptions of the characters and scenes, so I had no problem envisioning them as I read. I found myself gasping, holding my breath, and laughing right along with the characters.

The story begins with a museum that has started giving IOU’s instead of paychecks due to its terrible financial situation. Then, by a twist of fate, and a little clumsiness, the Emerald Skeleton is found, and the museum is making money again. This comes with its own set of problems and questions. Is the skeleton a real skeleton, and if so, how did it turn into an emerald? Where did the skeleton come from, and why had it been in the museum with no one knowing about it? Most importantly when the skeleton disappeared where did it go?

My favorite character was Detective William H. Holmes. He was goofy and funny and exasperating all at the same time. I could visualize the looks of joy during his aha moments and the crestfallen, but determined, looks he would give when he realized he still did not quite have it all figured out. The author gave just enough clues to the mystery to make me think I had it figured out and then something would change, and I would realize I had it all wrong, just like the detective. Of course, this kept me turning the pages all the way to the end!

At its core, The Mystery of the Emerald Skeleton is a classic mystery, as the title states. It is reminiscent of some of the great classics such as Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, and Sherlock Holmes. However, this book is not just a mystery, it also has drama, humor, and suspense. It seemed that every time I thought I was at the end, and everything was wrapping up, another twist would occur, and the story would go in another unexpected direction. The final ending leaves you wanting more and looking for the next book in the series. In my opinion, this makes for an exceptional story, especially since the author gives you a small glimpse of what you will be missing if you do not read the next book!

The only negatives in his book are some small errors, which is why I gave it a 4 out of 5 stars rather than a full five stars.
