Author Sean Kenny's fictional work "The Ulstermen" is rooted in Irish history. The story takes place two millennia ago, and although it is a work of fiction, the author has meticulously researched the historical details to give the impression that the novel is factual.

The fabled conflict between the High King of Ulster and the High Queen of Connacht is explored in the novel. Ferdia and Setanta, two of the primary characters, go through their early years as close friends. When they grow up, they'll end up on opposing sides of the conflict. Violence, treachery, and deceit result from the testing of their relationship and loyalty. You can't help but feel bad for the two young men as they are put to the test and made to make decisions that are outside of their understanding. Will friendship and loyalty win out, or will the grizzled fighters simply see faces? This book provided numerous opportunities to comprehend the reasoning behind decisions, such as the advantages of battling in a riverbed over open combat. The romantic interests of Ferdia and Setanta add complexity to the novel. The romance is just right—it's never overpowering—and it permeates the entire book.

The action starts straight away in this novel, which is something I truly enjoyed about it. You get to know the well-developed characters as the action is happening. I thought it was wonderful how the author brought the reader into the beautiful scenery and sacred days and customs of Ireland, such as Bealtaine.

I really enjoyed everything about this book. The author's attention to detail and thorough research were clear, the length was ideal, and there were very few editing issues. I gave it a five out of five.
