The Last Man

What do you think about the Romantic-era image of "The Last Man" in poetry? Some poems that come to mind are Mary Shelley's, Thomas Hood's, and Thomas Campbell's (all called "The Last Man"). There's also Byron's "Darkness". Why did this image emerge at the time and how does each writer interpret it differently?

Romantics were deeply interested in exploring human emotions, the sublime, and the boundaries of experience. I believe the image of "The Last Man" allowed poets to probe existential themes, such as isolation, the meaning of life, and the fate of humanity.
