Have you read Dan Brown's other books? Like Angels and Demons? Many people say they enjoyed it better.

Or Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh's The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail, which some believe Dan Brown plagiarized for The Da Vinci Code.

The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco would be another good book to try. It's a murder mystery set in a 14th century Italian monastery. Eco is a semiotician, so the book has a flavor very similar to The Da Vinci Code.

I just picked up Angels & Demons yesterday. Is it very similar to the Da Vinci code?

arcalis - Other books I've read that are similar are The Rule of Four (Ian Caldwell and Dustin Thomason), The Confessor (Daniel Silva) and
The Magic Circle (Katherine Neville). I'd recommend all three although be warned that the first half of The Rule of Four is quite difficult to get into but improves thereafter.
