When I find out that a gifted book will be appreciated by a person, absolutely! On the flip side, when I hear the response to the casual question if they like to read or not, "I can't stand reading." Then no, won't waste the money in that department.

I really enjoy giving and receiving books under all circumstances. We all have endless TBR's we could never hope of devouring. My TBR actually reminds me of that boy who is trying to eat that rich chocolate cake in Matilda sometimes - too rich and overwhelming to face. A gift card would certainly be helpful in acquiring some of those must-haves we've been dying for. But personally, I would much rather a book I didn't like than a gift card. I think what others read is such an insight into them, and presumably if they are giving me a gift I have some affiliation with them. So, the book becomes a bonding opportunity, regardless of my appreciation of the content I feel like I've gotten insight into someone I care about.
Funny story - my grandfather gave me a book once for my <14th birthday. First book he'd ever given me. Turns out it was a zesty romance with infidelity and all sorts of...interesting...spice. I asked him about it, nonchalantly, since I assumed he had no idea what he'd given me.
His response?
"I asked the bookstore for an adult women's book, because you read such big books!"
Adorable!
