I Almost Married My Best Friend by DeNitra E. Bradley shows her journey navigating friendship, love, and the complex and unexpected events that occur in life. Bradley divides her poetry into nine chapters, describing her relationship with Albert K. Taylor Jr. from 2003 to 2009. Each chapter shows several poems describing significant moments and reflections that evolved their relationship from friends to romantic partners. Each chapter has roughly ten short poems.

From the carefree innocence of young friendships to the uncertainty of transitioning into lovers, Bradley explores themes of fear, commitment, and the deep connection she shared with Albert. Through heartwarming and introspective lines, she describes their unique relationship, from playful banter to deep spiritual connections.

I liked that the book follows a linear pattern. Bradley shows how, in five years, her relationship with Albert grew and how people and external circumstances challenged their bond. I personally relate to Bradley’s poems on love and resilience despite the challenges that people or external circumstances might impose on your life.

I deducted a star, however, because the book contains excessive grammatical mistakes, which distracted me from each poem’s message. I also deducted a star because many poems seemed excessively rushed, making the book feel incomplete and difficult to understand its message. I rate the book 3 out of 5 stars. Despite these shortcomings, if readers look beyond the excessive grammatical mistakes and rushed aspects, Bradley provides a genuine story of how two lovers navigated through tough challenges and always stuck together.

Overall, I Almost Married My Best Friend offers readers a linear set of poems that explore love, friendship, family, friends, and external circumstances beyond our control. Readers who have experienced the complexities of navigating romantic relationships with a close friend will relate to this book. In addition, readers who believe in God and the power of prayer will enjoy Bradley’s faith and perseverance.
