ARA Review by Peter Bellone of The Curious Journey of Biscuit Boy
The curious journey of Biscuit boy is a joyful story told by Hamid Oudi and centers on the creation and life of a boy, called Biscuit, who starts life as a chocolate biscuit, that is magically turned into a real brown skinned baby, who is immediately adopted by the bakery mistress, a Mrs. Sweetman, who raises Biscuit from a baby into the man Biscuit becomes. Biscuit becomes a baker because of the influence of Mrs. Sweetman, as well as the praises he receives from others who taste his 'sweet treats'.
This short story is a delight to read, and is very uplifting, though it is a bit tongue-in-cheek, in that Mrs. Sweetman raises Biscuit, similar to one of her bread biscuits, before placing them in the oven.
Biscuit, a boy with chocolate-colored skin, faces an identity crisis as he grows up among peers who are supposedly of a different skin color, causing him to question if he is valued for his baking skills or for the person who he is. Though this conflict remains unresolved by the end of the book, his racial quandary is overshadowed by the gratitude of those enjoying Biscuit's sweet treats. Pointing toward a moral observation, which is this: What is more important, morose over being of a different skin color, or being of value to your community?
I give this book a Rating of five out of five stars Because of its uplifting and joyful nature. Gloom and doom pervade the world. Therefore, this book shows how a positive attitude/thinking can conquer prejudice and bring joy to a troubled society.
The story of Biscuit centers on his life. It begins where he supposedly originated from, then goes on to his formative years. Biscuit grows up having experienced all the trauma of a young boy in school, then onto his becoming a young man going off to a baking collage.
During these formative years, Biscuit notices that his skin color differs from those around him, and because of this skin color difference, biscuit wonders if people value him for his baking skills, or do they like him for himself, as well as his positive personality. Apparently, while this skin color difference cause biscuit some distress, he overcomes his own prejudice, and moves on with his life.
With the passing years, Biscuit enrolls in a Baking College. Baking and its delicious creations greatly interest everyone there. However, Biscuit almost quits college because he doubts himself because of his own preconceived notions. However, Biscuit focuses on his baking career instead of letting his dark skin get him down. He conquers his self-doubt once more. He eventually encounters a young woman who shares his passion for baking. They quickly became friends, then to be romantically involved, and finally, they get married. In time, they became parents to a son and a daughter. The remaining narrative follows these four individuals, highlighting their journey to becoming valuable community members through their exceptional baking skills and high-quality products.
