No music is preferable and no loud talking.

I choose music that I listen to based upon what I am reading. I love urban fiction. So I tend to listen to hip hop or r and b while I'm reading.

Usually I can't focus if I'm just starting a book and music is playing, if I'm already into the story then it doesn't matter. There are exceptions: The book I'm currently reading Southern Gods by John Hornor Jacobs is deeply rooted in back country blues and gothic horror themes so I have been reading it with old blues songs playing very softly in the background.

Sometimes, I like listening to classical music, but toherwise no. I find that songs with lyrics make me lose focus of what i am reading and i get frustrated, so i avoid listening to music when i read.
I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.

"It wasn't anything to do with classical music or Mozart, it was to do on whether you liked [listening to] something or not."
In one of his more recent studies, Perham says, he found that reading while listening to music, especially music with lyrics, impairs comprehension. I usually listen to a song I've heard a bunch of times so I don't get distracted in listening to the words. It's usually pretty low.

Or else I listen to some kind of elevator-esque type of music -- it has a Books-A-Million feel in there. (Think about how easy it is to just sit down in a B-A-M chair, relax, and read in the store. It's easy. I think the reason why is because of the relaxing music that just gives you a sense of utmost comfort.

When I am at work, there is always a radio going in the background so it doesn't really bother me that much. Although, I prefer to have no noise around.

When I was younger, I really could have anything on, lyrical or not. But nowadays I prefer to either have silence, ambience (like some sort of rain maker), or instrumental music.

I can but would prefer peace and quiet while reading. If I do decide to have music on it is generally instrumental because lyrics distract me and I catch myself listening to them while reading. Then before I realize it I have read half a page and have no idea what I just read.

I used to listen to music while I read, but now I find it too distracting.
