Deceptive Calm is the perfect name for this book. It represents Vanessa's demeanor and manner of seeming like everything is okay, but deep down, has this inner hurt that she cannot express. To be her true self comes with lots of opposition and hurt. Thus is one of those reads I cannot see being turned into a limited series.

“Deceptive Calm” by Patricia Skipper is a story about human’s need to be accepted. The sample was an incredible story about the Catholic School bus being attacked by the South Carolina Ku Klux Klan in 1968. The black students were placed in the center seats since they would be the targets of the brainless white supremacists that attacked the school bus with bricks and baseball bats. Trisha, a white girl sitting by a bus window was seriously injured by a brick and almost died from cranial trauma and loss of blood. She was operated on by a black neural surgeon in a black hospital and this doctor saved her life. Having lived through the riots and Klan attacks this story brought back many memories. Vanessa, a young lady at the orphanage that was never adopted was a very good friend of Trisha and she was a wonderful example of succeeding in a very poor environment. It is sad that white supremacy is still very strong in the U.S. and these people will never let the Civil War end. This is a wonderful book that should be enjoyed by all members.

Racism is still a big problem in our society and a terrible desease that must be stopped. However, it's also important to never forget our history and the terrible decisions people have made because of racism, this book is a great example of the stories that can't be forgotten and must be a lesson for generations to come.
Great review very honest and well-written.

Vanessa, Trisha and Sis Rosalie are three of the main characters in "Deceptive Calm" by Patricia Skipper. There are themes of friendship, loyalty and being upstanding within the story. The KKK and racism raise their ugly heads and medical problems intermix with prejudices. It sounds convoluted but the reviewer really liked the story and the character development.

The plot is nice where Vanessa struggles to accept her identity as a black woman. Trisha helps Vanessa through all their problems. I'm curious about how the author wrote Vanessa's character development. This will be an interesting book to read. Thanks for the review. Congrats on the BOTD and the BOTM!

Thank you for your great review. I'm glad that you enjoyed it. I also liked the character development and the friendship between Trisha and Vanessa. The late 60s was a tumultuous time, especially in smaller towns. I enjoy books that deal with friendship. After reading your review I decided to add this to my list of books to read.

Anyone who has read the book "Deceptive Calm" by Patricia Skipper would concur with Andrew's view that man, just as Vanessa, is a rational being who responds uniquely to situations. In situation of loneliness and danger, for instance, notable response would be finding identity and acceptance. The Skipper's 2023 book is worthy five star rating, given its balanced mix of tension, character development, and story advancement. Actually, I recommend a read to anyone who seeks a book with captivating tale story with well-developed characters and exceptional finish.
