The Pornographer of Vienna - Lewis Crofts

Post by paperbackreader »

Has anyone read this? It's stunning. Part historical novel, part tale of youthful excess, part tragedy, part love-story. It charts the life of a renegade painter in Vienna before the first world war and hurtles from girl to war to fame to poverty.

I've read Girl With A Pearl Earring and The Painted Kiss before, but this wiped both of them to one side. There was somethign saccharine about those other books and not really how I imagined raucous artists live. The Pornographer of Vienna manages the opposite.

And all this wrapped up in prose which reminded me of Will Self and Nabokov and Kundera.... but then none of them at the same time. very surreal.
