Percy the Pesky Squirrel, by Marguerite D. Nicholls, is a fun little book that teaches children about the value of sharing. The story is a whimsical tale about the titular squirrel and his behavior towards a birdfeeder. Percy selfishly scares the birds away from the birdfeeder so he can eat his fill of the seed it contains, not caring that the poor birds are going hungry. One day, a girl named Lucy runs out of the house while Percy is eating and scares him away, just like he did to the birds. Percy, unsurprisingly, does not enjoy this treatment and ultimately changes his own behavior as a result. Percy gets a surprising reward at the end of the book, and Lucy and all of the animals are happy.
As the parent of three young children, the topic of sharing is something I find myself discussing with some regularity. Any time one of my kids gets some snack or fun reward, their siblings inevitably descend on them, just like Percy and the birds. Chaos nearly always ensues. Kids have a habit of tuning out when you talk too much, so having a colorful book to illustrate the importance of learning to share is pretty valuable for me. I really enjoy reading this book to those kids, which is good, because now they ask me for it every night at bedtime.

The book is exceptionally well edited, which is something I value in a children’s book because two of my children are learning to read. I also loved the illustrations; Marianna Smith did a great job on everything, but I was particularly impressed with how she played with the light in every panel that took place under the leaves of the big tree.

I have absolutely no complaints about this book. I’d rate it a full five out of five, and I look forward to reading it with my kids until they finally move on to their next obsession.

I really enjoyed how Percy the Pesky Squirrel also looks like a colorful animated movie but in fact it is teaching young children about sharing. The manner in which children learn in this entertaining story of Percy who is unselfishly converted shows that it is an eventful and realistic learning process for the young ones. From the perspective of a parent, I have to appreciate that the content of the book is informative as well as the illustrations – especially the light under the tree leaves in the final part of the book look very nice. I am glad that the book is fantastic and taken a great sense by your kids – I’d read it for my children too.

The story follows Percy, a mischievous squirrel who hoards a birdfeeder’s seeds, leaving the birds hungry. After a lesson in empathy from Lucy, Percy learns the value of kindness and sharing, ultimately finding joy in making others happy. This whimsical tale offers a valuable moral in an engaging and accessible way for young readers.
