Mrs. Michelle Obama My Favorite first First Lady Forever, by Rosa Rickenbacker Anderson, is the story of a schoolgirl named Raine and her experience meeting Michelle Obama. The story begins with Raine waking up disoriented. She had just had a dream about meeting Michelle Obama, but she forgot the details of her dream upon awakening. For some reason, she also forgot that she had written and submitted a detailed report about Michelle Obama and who Michelle Obama is. Raine spends the whole day in a confused fog, thinking about a beautiful woman (Michelle Obama) that she doesn’t know and knowing something is special about the day. Ultimately, Raine remembers what she’s been forgetting in time to meet Michelle Obama.

This was not my favorite children’s book. I really enjoyed the concept behind it and thought it might be a good way to introduce my daughter to politics. I was somewhat disappointed in the book itself. The writing is a little awkward, and there are a few issues with the book’s grammar. The story itself contains only a small measure of whimsy. Mostly it is just Raine being confused and feeling strange, and interacting with people who are commenting on how she is acting confused and strange. For all that the book is centered on Michelle Obama, when she actually appears in the book her character does not do very much. She takes a back seat not only to Raine but also to Raine’s “sort of brother," Jeff.

I did enjoy the artwork, and I think it’s a very cute concept for a book. I just would have liked to see it executed a little more thoughtfully. Given the grammatical errors and the somewhat clunky storytelling, I have to rate this book a three out of five. It does have potential, and I would love to read a second draft at some point.
